Category B+E

What is B+E?

Gaining the additional B+E category on your licence allows you to drive a car/van/pickup-trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Train Weight (GVTW) of 3.5 tonnes or over.

Most trailers and almost all caravans fall under these parameters.

Who needs it?

To commence training, you must have Category B (car) on your licence. However, whether or not you need the additional category (+E) depends on one main factor:

When did you pass your car test?

If you passed before January 1997 (including retests), you have what are called ‘Grandfather rights’; this allows you to drive a vehicle/trailer combination of up to 3.5 tonnes (3,500 kilograms). If you passed your car test after that date, and wish to tow any trailer over 750kg, you will need to acquire the additional category on your licence.

So, what’s involved?

Firstly, one of our dedicated instructors will carry out a driving assessment.

This is a 25-to-30 minute drive incorporating various road types and traffic situations; by assessing your skill level, habits and driver behaviour, your instructor will be able to determine how many days of training will be required for you to pass your B+E test.

The training will be delivered over half-day sessions, during which you will benefit from one-to-one tuition from your own dedicated driving instructor. In the course of the training, you will encounter a variety of road situations in and around the Tyneside area.

The Test

The B+E test is conducted over approximately 75 minutes; during the test the examiner will focus on four core elements:

  • Safety checks on the vehicle and the trailer;
  • Reversing;
  • Coupling and Uncoupling;
  • Driving.

The driving element of the test is assessed against LGV standards; as a commercial vehicle driver training school, we boast the experience and the expertise to help ensure your driving standards do not only meet these requirements, but exceed them.

Book a Driving Assessment

  • A driving assessment lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. A NEDS instructor will conduct a session covering all the basic exercises that will be included on the driving test.
  • The instructor will take you out onto public roads, giving a short demo-drive before changing places and assessing your driving standard under real conditions.
  • At the end of it, the instructor will recommend the appropriate duration of the driving training you should undergo.

Book a Driver Training Course

  • After your Assessment, you’ll be ready to book your training. The session will last as long as the instructor recommended at the end of your Assessment.
  • The training will include the driving test. There is no theory test in the B+E.

All assessments and training sessions are carried out at our facilities in Team Valley, Gateshead.
