Category C1

What is Category C1?

Gaining the Category C1 qualification enables you to drive a large goods vehicle weighing between 3,500kg and 7,500kg.

If you wish to drive a goods vehicle over 3.5 tonne gross vehicle weight (GVW), with or without a trailer, you must hold at least a C1 on your licence.

With Cat C1 on your licence, you will be able to drive ambulances, smaller removal trucks and most horseboxes. Additionally, if you wish to drive Category C1+E vehicles, you must pass your C1 test first.

Do I need the training?

Whether you need the training depends on one major factor: did you pass your car test before January 1997?

Passed Test Before January 1997

If you did, you may already have the C1 entitlement on your licence. If this is the case, the code ‘107’ will be listed next to the category on the back of your licence. ‘107’ represents a special restriction which prevents the holder from towing a trailer weighing over 750kg.

To lift this restriction, you will need to take C1+E training and pass the test.

Passed Test After January 1997

If you passed your car test after January 1997, you will not have the C1 entitlement. Therefore, you will need to take the training and pass the test. In order to qualify for C1 training, you will need to have Category B on your licence and be of at least 18 years.

What can I expect?

The Category C1 (previously known as Class 3) training is typically delivered over the course of four days.

So, what’s next?

Because of the level of training involved, we will typically recommend candidates take the full Category C programme; gaining Category C on your licence will enable you to drive rigid large goods vehicles of up to 32 tonnes GVW. This qualification will greatly improve your job prospects and provide you with an entirely new skill-set.

The first step of the process is to undergo a Driving Assessment; typically this lasts around 30 minutes and allows the instructor to ascertain your current skill level, legislative knowledge and driving habits. With this information, they are able to put together a bespoke training plan specific to your requirements.
